Special on Quedagh Merchant [ship] – an amazing found
On Wednesday, November 14, 2007, Amaras hosted Karen Balayan – Capitan of Armenian sailing ship “Cilicia”
During his presentation Capitan Balayan explained plans to find the wreckage of Quedagh Merchant, an Armenian owned merchant ship captured by Capitan Kidd in 1698. On December 13, 2007 Livescience.com reported that the ship has been found.
Armenian owners in Bengal leased the ship to the Indian government to transport their biggest treasure, but William Kidd captured the vessel in the waters of south of India. In January 1698 he took his most valuable prize ship and scuttled his own unseaworthy Adventure Galley…when he reached Anguilla, in the West Indies in April 1699 he learned that he had been denounced as a pirate…..he left Quedagh at the island of Hispaniola where the ship was possibly scuttled.
Many news organizations do not mention the “Armenian” ownership. – should you become aware of this would you consider sending a note to the editorial staff of the news agency.
